Ostia and Tivoli are the best
complement of Rome. On the other hand, hundreds of
historical towns are related with the Rome influence. We highly recommend to
have one day trip outside Rome with us, your Rome Travel Guide. |
| |
|
Needless to say that in each one of these trips we will need our private transportation.
Most of them are located at appx. 30' driving distance from Rome.
Your Rome Guide of Rometravels
suggests you a
sample of tours with some itineraries based on their location. Some of
them can be joined to each other. |

Ostia: main
Sea-port of the Ancient Rome, Ancient Ostia followed
step-by-step the History of Rome and its fall. It's the only archaeological site where
you may appreciate how about the real old Roman lifestyle and their beautiful ruins.
In fact, despite its enormous extension (70 hectares-173 acres), Ostia is very
much preserved, much better than Rome. We will walk by Frescoes, amazing
Mosaics, gigantic Baths, Ancient Temples, Warehouses, old Shops, Condominiums ( Insulae
),
Houses ( Domus
) and, of course, the Capitol. Second only to the Pompeii Excavations in
Italy. Please see the 3D reconstruction at this link:

The Necropolis of Portus:
"Portus" became
almost most important than Ostia since the Emperor Trajan built his port on the right side
of the Tiber River ( Ostia is on the left one ) on II C. A.D.
Portus can be visited only the first Saturday and the last Sunday of each month, whereas its necropolis is always open. Its
magnificent status of preservation will amaze you whenever we will walk through its frescos,
mosaics, stuccos. It is part of the undiscovered outskirts of Rome and nobody goes there.
So far, it will be more than beautiful to have a quick tour once people visit Ancient
Ostia, as it is located only 4 km (2,5 miles) away from the
ruins of and it is quite small. |

Villa d'Este ( Tivoli Gardens & Fountains ): Absolutely fascinating... built as the second
Italian Renaissance Villa, we should be grateful to the Cardinal Ippolito
d'Este if from XVIth C. on Villa d'Este was taken as the model for most of the famous
Italian Villas... not only celebrated for its hundreds of Fountains, pure hydraulic
engineering masterpieces, but also for its beautiful Gardens, full of plants,
stuccos, tiles, majolica's and flowers everywhere. Located East of Rome, we may spend an half
day. |
| |
|
"Valleys and chasms, nearness and distance, mountains covered with woods,
gorges where furious torrents flows, extinct volcanoes..." That is how Goethe
described the territory in his " Travels " in the County of Rome.
|
| |
|
Tivoli ( The Hadrian's Villa ):
Everyone knows the
Hadrian's' Walls
in North of England...such a gentleman who, coupled with his great taste for Architecture,
Greek Philosophy and Fine Arts, was able to plan by himself
120 hectares (300 acres) of pure geniality
and pleasure. It was a model for all Europeans in their Grand Tour of Rome since
the XVIIth C. There is nothing like this Villa in the Old Roman World: 4 Baths,
Theatres,
Stadium, Praetorians, monumental gardens and, of course, more mosaics, in-laid marbles and
statues. Should you visit both Villas in Tivoli ( Hadrian's and Villa d'Este ), please
consider a full day. |

Etruscans: You will be fascinated by the most important pre-Roman
civilization and the most religious one in the Mediterranean Sea. We will visit the
incredible archaeological site of Necropolis of Cerveteri, the most important, where tons of
frescos, gold necklaces, bronze statues and potteries were found starting from the 8th
century
b. C. It's highly recommend to join this tour with a short visit either to the
Etruscan Museum of Villa Giulia in Rome (the most important in the world) or with few
sections in the Vatican Museums. Located North-West, it takes a half day (without the
museums). |
| |
|
Roman Castles
and Villas: Local traditions are better
expressed only if you get here. Albano, Ariccia, Castelgandolfo, Frascati, Genzano,
Grottaferrata, Marino, Nemi... Need to see the Summer Papal Residence? A couple of
lakes with historical medieval towns above? Do you want to see the main political centre
of the pre-Romans? Located at
South-East of Rome, half day is requested. |
| |
|
Medieval Castles
& Churches:
Mamma Mia! It won't last a lifetime! We
would need three web sites...and if you heard that "All Roads lead to Rome",
we may choose any directions: West, North, N-W, N-E, East, S-E and South. Hermitages,
Abbeys, Medieval Castles and private properties everywhere. We suggest to book in advance
as in most of them visits are on request. |

|
Palestrina:
the most outstanding pagan Sanctuary of Rome, 2nd Century
b. C dedicated to the "Fortuna Primigenia". Being of such an incredible
size, it could be seen until Anzio. Masterpiece of architecture, a real religious center in the county where in XVth C.
one Family decided to turn part of it into a Castle that now it is a wonderful museum.
Seven terraces, hundreds of columns, enchanting views, landscapes, and the
most fascinating and accurate mosaic in the whole Roman World, The Nile
landscape.
East side from the Capital, need a half day. |
